"Open With..." issue by Phil James
I sometimes get an icon on my desktop that is an "Open With..." shortcut with a filename to open of "~". (I call it "Open With..." It's a standard icon of a sheet of paper folded over on one corner with a Windows symbol on the paper. When I right-click it, the "Open With..." tool comes up. When...

I've installed Win98SE on an HP Pavilion A656X computer, ASUS A7V8X-LA (Kelut) motherboard. I have an external serial Diamond Supra 56e Pro modem on the onboard COM1 socket. I use it in both DOS and Windows. Here is the problem, which I've never had with my previous ISA modems: The...

"port capture" to a network printer by Donald Campbell
A lot of printers now have a network port so that they can sit directly on a LAN without the need of a PC. I have these set up on Win98 and they work fine from Windows programs, but not from DOS software. Does anyone know how to print from a DOS program to a printer in this fashion?

"RAM in use" meter by PSRumbagh
Is there a program available that will display, in real time, the amount of RAM (in MB) in use? It would be handy if the displayed amount appeared in the System Tray and was active all of the time. Paul

"RPC stub" error. I finally decided to find out what it is. by thanatoid
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Download_Area/ATW_Library/Windows _Misc/Win___9-Incompatible_version_of_the_RPC_stub_error.pdf It's a 2 page 70KB PDF file. The first page, explaining /why/ this happens is worth it even if you still use a 9600 modem. Absolutely hilarious - yet, sad. Good old...

"save (As)" function comes and goes ... by J. P. Gilliver
(Sory to those who've seen this before, but if there were any answers, I missed them.) I have two W98SElite systems: a 2.4G desktop, and a 450M laptop. On the whole, the laptop is much more stable (and no, I really don't want to reload/reinstall - they are both after years of configuration, and...

"Save As" dialog box by ccbobbi
A problem recently developed with "Save As" dialog boxes: the directories appear in reverse chronological order, not alphabetical order. I know how to get them back into alphabetical order (by clicking on the "details" button, then on the name column heading, but it doesn't stick. Next time I open...

"Save As" Preference by Roger Fink
When using Office (97), how can I get the "Save As" dialog box to default to either "Desktop" or, better yet, the last saved location, rather than "My Documents"?

"Save As..." dialog box and folder shortcuts by Ivan Bútora
Hi everyone, as some of you might know, the Windows 98 "Save As..." dialog box, besides being too small, clumsy, etc., has one annoying behavior. It lets you double-click through a folder shortcut, while replacing the name of the file to be saved with the name of that shortcut. (The next...

"Send immediately" doesn't... OE Guru needed by Gary S. Terhune
All of a sudden my posts are being relegated to the Outbox and waiting either for a manual Send/Receive or the every-five-minutes global Send/Receive I have set up. IOW, "Send messages immediately" doesn't. I've toggled the appropriate switch in Options, Send tab, with no luck. I've never seen...

"Send To" problem by Roger Fink
How do I get the email launch command in the context menu (Send To) to work again? Currently, when I click the email link, say when a desktop jpg is selected, nothing happens. I recently upgraded my email program (Thunderbird) and I think that was the culprit, not sure.

"This file is not signed so it won't run" message window by RoadWarriorLou
I downloaded Norton Internet Security 2005 on my daughter's Compaq with Windows 98, IE 6.0.2800.1106CO, SP1. When I tried to install it, I got an error message "Installation has failed. Would you like to try again?" Part of Symantec's fix is to download their "Norton Removal Tool" which I...

"View as web page" Problem by Yanni
I think this started after the last win98/IE updates. When I open, let's say, "My Documents", View as Web Page shows nothing but the little icons that come up when pictures won't load. This is the same in any opened file. IE won't show some pictures. Same icons show up in a blank box. Yahoo is...
