Long filename error by
Axel Berger
Scandisk for DOS, when started automatically on booting, reports a long
filename error on the system partition and tells me to run Scandisk in
Windows. The latter tells me no errors found.
I wouldn't mind, but Scandisk stops at the error and waits for a key to
be pressed. This means I can't go and...

Devices disappearing. by
Sjouke Burry[_3_]
Last week I got the torrent with the 700MB w98 "SP3",
and installed it on an old P3 800mhz machine.
Was able to get the drivers for the screen and
soundcard, by googling for ME drivers.
Everything worked fine, including internet.
Then this morning the ethernet card sort of disappeared.
Only after...

"98 Lite" by
[email protected]
Hi,
Some posts in this NG mentioned "98 Lite".
From the name, my impression is this is a stripped down version of
Windows 98. Is it more compact than a "Custom" install of Win98se?
Thank You in advance, John

How to save 'special' google home page images? by
Robert Macy[_2_]
Today, google put up a special, seasonal Thanksgiving image. When
it's a simple jpg or gif, right click and save the image, but today
the image is animated and won't save using that technique.
Any ideas on how to save the 'animated' image?

check or scan _without_ retesting sectors? by
J. P. Gilliver (John)
ISTR the old DOS-mode surface scan utility - the one that used character
mode, and drew a screenful of blocks, with each block representing a
sector or a number of sectors (it told you how many), with some of them
shown as B if it contained any bad sectors - did not, by default at
least, retest...

Need software to compare pictures to find duplicates by

Need software to compare pictures to find duplicates.
I have about 800 wallpaper pictures that I collected from different
sites. When I view them I occasionally see the same picture twice. I
know there are some duplicates, because different sites change the
names of them. Aside from manually...

Blank app name in "open with ..." list by
who where[_2_]
From somewhere at some time in the past (I don't use this all that
often) a new entry has appeared at the top of the app-list in the
"open with ..." selection box. It has the generic .exe icon (white
box with blue title bar at the top) and a blank name.
If I select say a .txt file on the desktop...

I am sorry for not making myself clear.
The "EchoLink" I recently download can be installed on a WinXP as it is,
but in order to install it on a Win98 computer, I have to first use
"INSTMSIA.EXE" (Win98 Installer). This "installer" provides what is needed
to install...

"INSTMSIA.EXE" Details by
[email protected]
Hi,
Recently I downloaded the newest version of "EchoLink" (a program used
by many "Ham" radio operators).
In order for me to install this on my Windows 98 computer, I had to
download "INSTMSIA.EXE" and install that first, which I did. Afterwards
I had no trouble installing...

Phantom boxes on the tool bar by
[email protected]
Why do I get these Phantom boxes on the tool bar?
For example, I dont use a screen saver, but apparently my monitor has
one built in and it blanks out if I'm not on the puter. Then there is
a box in the toolbar that says "screen saver". Later I will find this
box with these words, or just a blank...

Its official, today is Binary Day 11 11 11
That's November 11, 2011 for us humans, but 11 11 11 for computers.

And at 11:11am as well as 11:11pm, we will have 11 11 11 11...

"Disconnect" from Web using DSL by
[email protected]
Hi,
I have always used Dial Up, and on Nov 4 my DSL service begins.
I have learned a lot from this NG, and I still have more to learn.
With Dial Up, when I "disconnected", I knew my Win98 computer no longer
had a "gateway" to the Internet.
Note: I will be using Verizon's DSL...

Verizon DSL Update by
[email protected]
Hi,
I have learned a great deal from this Win98 NG, but there is more I want
to know.
Everything went very well with the transition from Dial-Up to Verzon's DSL
service on Nov 4th.
I have a Westell 7500 DSL modem/router from Verizon.
