I use a AMD ATHLON 1100 MHZ, 256 MB RAM, Windows 98. The start-up phase shows the cd-rw & dvd drive, however, the drives are not accessible and do not even show up in the device manager. This used to be an intermittent problem and now is all the time. Please help!

hi i have a 2 gb hd. i ran fdisk and set up 1 active partition. next i ran format and it stops b4 completeing leaving me with an unformmatted c: drive. if i rerun fdisk and set the partition to 1gb (half of my 2gb drive) it will then complete the format, but where did half of my useful space go?
