WIN98 SE Shutting down for no reason by pjhjones
I am running a WIN98 SE machine with a new hard drive installed about a week ago. For some reason every so often 15-20 minutes it automatically reboots on me. No error message or anything, but when it reboots it acts like it was just shut off and runs a scan disk. It is plugged in properly and...

can't access .pif by Ron Jacob
When I click Restart in DOS, it says access denied (to file Windows/Exit to Dos.pif). Can't access any of the .pif files. I did an SFC and ran Spybot, AdAware, etc. My system is clean. Should I reinstall Win98SE?

What? Where's the Windows Explorer association with this file? by Robert A. Macy
Running Win98FE and installed the sothink flv player Works great!, full screen, just double click on the .flv file and the video runs. Except... The icon in front of the .flv stays generic as though nothing will open it.

I am running Win98SE on partition c: and WinXP Pro on partition e: From the boot loader, when win98se is selected, I get an error from "shell" about not finding krnl32.exe. I believe I had a virus and have cleaned my machine from several sources. Luckily I have WinXP to do all this. I also have...

What's wrong now? internet pauses constantly by Robert A. Macy
Running IE6 SP1 on Win98 FE connected through 56K dialup modem Recently, periodically the system pauses for 20 seconds to upwards of 1 minute doing nothing! Checking connection details, there is no data coming or going. These pauses are like the CPU is super busy to the extent can't even doing...

Won't load OS by ms
Got into trouble in trying some W98 utilities. Apparently one of them was a NT type app. In a very reliable W98SE computer, I ran an executable, the machine then rebooted and now gives a DOS screen: ======== file is missing or corrupted; c:\windows\himem.sys there is an error in line 1 of...

How to install DSL, how to install ethernet card? by mm
So Verizon DSL is getting cheap and it's clear IMO that my current ISP (erols/rcn/starpower in Baltimore) is never going to have highspeed. Verizon sent me the kit and started billing me yesterday**, but not until I was on the last page of the Quick Start instructions and 2/3rds of the way through...

Duplicated Posts Showing in OE by PCR
Why am I seeing over 300 duplicated posts in this NG!? It seems the first post in many threads are showing the initial post TWICE. In some case, entire thread segments are duplicated. My inclination is to reset the NG. But I must go now-- no time to even investigate! The posts are identical, but...

Excuse the cross post, however, Windows 9X is just as vulnerable, if not more, than using outdated applications in other OSs. A basic explanation is found he http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=5473&tag=nl.e539 I suggest following the linked materials, and further research into the various...

No sounds in Windows 98 on virtual machine by Larry
In W98, no sounds. In the Sounds dialog, the arrow for testing Sounds events is grayed out. I figured it was a driver problem. In Device Manager, it says PCI Multimedia Audio Device. I double click on that and it says "drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) To reinstall drivers for...

Adaware SE paid version -- Worth the Cost? by Dan
I was wondering if the experts thought it was worth paying for Adaware SE paid version if one already has the free version along with Spybot -- Search and Destroy, Spysweeper by Webroot, and SpywareBlaster. It is this way in my case and I would appreciate any information that you can give me. ...

Safe Mode bootup after installing NIC by [email protected]
Hello tech gurus: I just reinstalled all the SW in my Win98se PC from scratch and had it working perfectly. Then I installed a new Belkin NIC in a PCI slot. Immediately after doing this, I could no longer boot properly. The PC would only let me boot into Safe Mode. I tried the following, but...
