Disk controller not loading, hard drive not seen by
PeteV

I do have IBM ThinkPad 570/Win98SE with Intel 440 chipset, and now after a
Windows repair "re-upgrade" round I have lost the Generic Disk Drive entry
from the Device Manager due to the IDE Controller loading problem.
I have already...

Disk Defrag & ScanDisk hanging by
scotch-writer
I've just recently had Win98SE reinstalled. Each time I've tried to defrag C
drive, Disk Defragmenter gets hung up on "Checking disk for errors 0%".
Likewise, when I try ScanDisk, the application stalls at "Checking file
allocation tables" & "Checking folders". Then a message comes up that...

When you don't know how to use something, read the directions. If you had,
you would have found that to see an answer, you must click the + in front of
a post's subject.

Disk Defragmentation by
Arkansas Hot Rod
Shows in box that defragmenting process is running, however, the percentage seldom changes-sometimes it will go up to 2%-but never further. Generally it remains on 0%.
Please, will somebody help me??

DISK DEFRAGMENTER by
Bob
Just curious. Does the disk defragmenter in Win 98
overwrite the empty space on the disk when it defragments?
I know the defragmentation process reorganizes disk data
so everything gets put back in its place for more
efficient access, but what about overwriting empty space?
Thanks. Bob

Disk Defragmenter by
[email protected]
I can only use the disk defragmenter tool in safe mode
instead of the regular Win98 mode. Does it make a
difference whether to use this tool in safe mode or do I
have to reinstall Windows in order for this to work?

I am getting a "non-system disk or disk error - replace
and strike any key when ready" at start-up when there is
no disk in the floppy or disk drives. What else would
cause this?

Programs of formatting a hard disk checks its surface and excludes the
damaged (unreliable) places from further use - this is written in the
manual. Clearly, that if after formatting a hard disk something will be
written on it, these excluded places will not be used. And will it be fair

folder of Windows going back over the lifetime of the
