What's wrong with Microsoft by
Dan
I am adding the 98 general newsgroup for their feedback as well.
The question of what is wrong with Microsoft is simple but I welcome
corrections if I am wrong. smile Microsoft is a big company with not
enough competition and so Microsoft does things their way. If and when
Microsoft has...

Mr. Gary S. Terhune by
LEO
On Feb.25th I posted a request for help in getting "standby" working again.
In response to your reply;
If you can't solve the problem, I don't think you should reply. I needed
help, NOT YOUR SERMON!!!!
Respectfully,
Leo

CD drives quit simultaneously by

HP 8200 CDWriter and Mitsumi CD drive in W98SE
I don't use the writer drive very often, but it usually makes data CD's
with few coasters.
Last time, I was making backup data CD's, made several fine. I reboot
before each try, much better success.
The next new Imation blank CD became a coaster. I...

VFAT Error by
Dave Hawley
Sorry if this is a double post. My first attempt appeared to fail!
I am having a very difficult to diagnose start-up problem with Windows 98SE.
The system has been fine for years, with no start-up or shut-down problems. I
recently installed Microsoft Office XP. The initial install, updating...

Who is using Zone Alarm? by
poatt
I found out that Sygate is no longer there. It was acquired by Norton.
And Sygate's free personal firewall is discontinued.
So I downloaded Zone Alarms free firewall.
Seems to be working very well. Internet page loading seems to be faster
also. But that just may be my imagination.
I was wondering...

Replacing the boot drive, w/o reinstalling Windows and the apps? by
Bill in Co.
Am I correct here in assuming that one CAN (simply) replace their original
bootable HD, without reinstalling Windows and all the programs all over
again, by either using Ghost, or (maybe?) the HD manufacturer's utilities
that come with the new drive? (I'm thinking of Western Digital here)
Do the...

3 1/2 floppy drive names accumulate and are wrong! by
Robert A. Macy
For some reason Win98 won't keep track of the directories on the
floppies:
Example:
Two floppies. both have only one subfolder each with many files in
each subfolder
Disk 1 has folder Book 1, nothing else in root
Disk 2 has folder Book 2, nothing else in root
Windows Explorer shows
3 1/2 floopy...

C Windows profiles user application data by
LuckyStrike
I can see maybe removing some elements in small degrees...those which seems
"harmless"; but to delete the entire lot of contents within the user folder
of C:\Windows\Profiles seems ....um...risky to me with my limited knowledge.
On one occasion I booted up as per usual, and then was asked for a...

I happen to like Win98, and here's why I do by
MEB
This is a "lead-in", to discussions of why users like Win98.
Everywhere on the NET, we find lots of discussions regarding the newer OSs
from Microsoft, even here we've seen people expounding upon XPs vastly
superior abilities . I think, since we are still using these
Win98 OSs, we should have the...

Norton Internet Security 2005 by
E. Fridman
Hi,
I use Norton Internet Security 2003.
In 2004 I opted not to upgrade to NIS 2004 but just to renew the
subscription. There seemed to be a consensus that 2004 version was
less reliable.
Now, in 2005, I have the same dilemma: upgrade or renewal? While I
understand that a lot of folks here are...
