task bar ghosts after Avast removal by who where[_2_]
In Win98SE, a freshly downloaded/installed Avast locked up the machine while Firefox 2 was running. Three finger salute was ignored, and had to do a hard reset. On subsequent restart, after the inevitable Scandisk invocation, two weird things occurred. Firstly, on the task bas - before the...

Windows 98 version of the vnetusbr.sys file: by Dwight S Smith
My computer runs on Windows 98 and does not have the resources to upgrade to any higher version of Windows. I have found several versions of this file for newer versions of windows, however, none of them are formatted for Windows 98. I can not buy new equipment for Windows 98, and this WiFi...

XP Pro as well as 98SE by [email protected]
I have 98SE + the current AutoPatcher for 98SE + RP7.11 installed on my P3 600, 256megs, Radeon 7000, DSL internet computer. Everything is working superbly but I am now thinking of moving up to XP pro because Avast, the last free AntiVirus software to support 98SE will probably stop that support in...

Will a new harddrive work witn win98SE? by mm
Are any of the external, or if need be internal, harddrives that are sold at stores these days work with win98SE? I know that the MP3 player I bought two years ago said it required XP, but that was just if I wanted to use special features. As long as I only wanted to copy files to it from a PC...

Windows Explorer suddenly doesn't open at startup by stephen9876
As far back as I can remember, if I had an Explorer window opened at shutdown, the same window would open automatically at the next startup. Suddenly, in the last couple of days, this is no longer happening. I didn't make any changes to my system, much less any that could reasonably account for...

TABBING not working by mandy
Hello Not sure if this is a Windows 98 problem, but being a 98 user, it has happened to me. When I am filling out Dialogue Boxes and so on, I used to just TAB to the next section, but now, when I hit TAB, it minimises everything instead of putting me in the next field to fill out. Does anyone...

Win 98 Bootup Problem by Scott
My Win98 desktop has had a problem booting up twice recently. After recognizing the CD ROM, it starts displaying lines and lines of drivers, plus MSD, MSD MSD MSD, etc. After shutting it down a few times, it reboots normally. Is this a registry problem? Other than entering "scanrag /restore" the...

From post by ojn at Techuy's 31July2009. Checked for real. Avast has added the following notice without much announcement. See: http://www.avast.com/eng/system-requ...vast-home.html : "Note: The operating systems Windows 95/98/Me/NT4 will be supported until the end of 2009."

Windows 98 in a modern world by Dan
This is sort of a question and comment because I was wondering how users could still keep up to date as much as possible with a Windows 98 machine in a modern computing environment. 1. The Opera Browser is still supporting Windows 98 2. Java 5 is still being updated through October 30, 2009 3....

wireless under 98SE (again) by rebel
I've just inherited an olde laptop which limits on 98SE. It came with a fresh 98SE install and a loose wireless NIC (RoamAbout by Enterasys) which the previous owner had used successfully on the machine. There was no info with the NIC but the P/O supplied a link to the drivers...

BAT file to delete all .tmp files in a certain folder by Larry
I think I asked about this a while ago but got hung up with it. I have a certain folder, let's call it C:\Drafts, which periodically fills up with lots of .tmp Word files which I delete by opening the folder, doing a search for .tmp files, and deleting them. I want to automate this process with a...
