I recently did my windows update. Next day got auto update and without paying attention did the update again. Will that hurt anything or do I need to remove one and if I do how?? Told ya I was computer dumb!!

About half the time I try to shut down, the screen goes to my background pattern and stays there. I can then shut down by pressing the reset button, logging on and then shutting down again. How Do I get machine to shut down all the time?
