I want to prevent as many background programs as possible from running every time I start my computer (Windows 98, cable modem, ample, I think, ram). How can I find out what all the programs listed in the Task Manager are and whether or not I can remove them?

All my files have lost the color for the icon. The icons are there but they all are black. When I click on "Large Icons" the color returns. However when I change to "small icons "they return to black. Anyone have any idea why this is happening? I have not changed or added anything.
